September - Part I

September - Part I

With the date of our departure for our mission getting closer and closer, I really wanted to spend more time with my grandchildren.  I am so glad that we had the family camp out, tea Party, and girl's lunch to make some lasting memories, but I wanted more!  I had Ruby and Evie come over to our house to play, bake something together and eat lunch. We made some mini banana muffins.  Those two love playing together and had a great time until poor little Evie got sick with the stomach flu.  She rested while Ruby and I finished the muffins and ate  a quick lunch and then I took the girls home.

I love to take my daughters and granddaughtersto quilt shows, and Payson has a show every September.  I invited just the older girls (we missed you Gigi!) to go the see the quilts and I was happy that Hailey could also go!  After seeing all  the quilts, we had lunch at Dalton's Restaurant.

Kelly, Tricia, Allison and Jessica were gone to Los Angeles to celebrate Tricia's 40th birthday!  Happy Birthday Tricia - we all love you!
The girls had a wonderful time in Disneyland and going to see the musical - Hamilton!

Out to Breakfast With the Boys

I also wanted to do something special with my grandsons, so I decided to take them to breakfast.  We went to IHOP and they each chose what sounded good to them.
Alex, Sam and Preston wanted hot chocolate with whipped cream to drink.

Dex had orange juice  to drink which he said was "too sourie"!
Preston chose chicken and waffles, Sam, Alex and I had eggs, bacon and pancakes, and Dex had a big chocolate chip pancake with a chocolate and whipped cream face and then he wanted strawberry syrup on top.  It was a fun outing and a good chance to spend some time with my grandsons!  Of course we missed Treygan and Liam!!

Sister's Retreat

Hal took a trip with Evan, Bob and Casey Taylor to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for a  one week "golf-a-thon" .  So in his absence, I had a Sister's Retreat.  For the last few years we have talked about wanting to go to Oakley, Idaho to visit Aunt Nedra, so that was first on the list.  Kay and Pam drove up from St. George and spent the night with the plan to meet Joan in Oakley the next afternoon. We were sorry and sad that Cindy couldn't make it - she works as a secretary at a charter school and couldn't take time off at such a busy time of year.
When Pam and Kay arrived, I had dinner ready for them.
We had hot chicken salad, lots of pickles, veggies and garlic bread.  Then for dessert we had fresh peach pie.
The next morning we ate a quick breakfast and headed for Oakley with Kay driving - bless her heart - I don't think I have ever said on my blog that I hate driving, especially in SLC traffic!  And. . . Kay did an awesome job!

We arrived at Nedra's at 1:00PM and Nedra showed us to our rooms in the basement - she has lots of beds for guests.  We were delighted to find one of the original signs that Grandpa Gabrielsen put out in front of all the homes he built hanging on her basement wall.  Of course, we had to take pictures of this!
We were delighted to find that our cousin Leslie and her cute son, Spencer had driven up from Ogden for the occasion.
They had prepared the most wonderful lunch for us!  It looked beautiful and tasted wonderful! The menu was: Chicken Salad, fresh fruit, cucumbers in vinegar and Nedra's homemade jams and rolls - everything was delicious!
For dessert we had homemade cream puffs with homemade chocolate fudge sauce - one of the best things I have ever eaten!!!  Of course we all wanted the recipes!
Nedra and Leslie are both awesome cooks and Spencer jumped in and helped with dishes and anything else that needed doing!

Nedra gave us a copy of her Personal History which is a treasure!!
After lunch we spent the afternoon visiting with Nedra, Leslie  and Spencer - it was so fun to catch up on each other's lives, and we also asked Nedra lots of questions about her memories of Grandma and Grandpa Gabrielsen and her life.  We learned a lot and I am glad that I took some notes.  Nedra has had an amazing life and she can do anything she decides to do!  At 85 years young, she teaches 15 piano students, does all her yardwork, plays the organ for church, quilts works on family history, keeps the books for the Bedke Wine Cup Ranch etc. etc.  She is awesome and I have always admired her!
Leslie takes after her mom and  also has many, many talents!

Cute Eric had invited us to dinner that evening at his home, but he couldn't wait to join the group so he came over later in the afternoon.  We talked and talked and laughed and reminisced and learned family history until it was time to go to Eric and Marcie's for dinner.

Before dinner, we had a small "photo shoot" with Aunt Nedra and cousins - Eric and Leslie.

Marcie and Eric had put together a wonderful roast beef dinner featuring Bedke beef of course!

We had roast beef, potatoes and gravy, fresh asparagus and fresh tomatoes and a delicious peach dessert - everything was yummy!

Dinner conversation touched on: family, ranching, temple decor, politics, and church callings among other topics.  We learned that Eric had served for four years as a Primary Chorister!  I had to take his picture for this, he should be famous!  How many men do you know that have served as a bishop, a high councilor , etc. etc. and a Primary Chorister too??
It was a magical afternoon and evening and one we won't forget for a really long time! We didn't get back to Nedra's until well after 11:00 PM and then, Leslie and Nedra stayed up to put together an egg casserole for our breakfast the next morning! This meal was just a good as the others with toast made from Nedra's homemade bread, the egg casserole, fresh fruit and of course, Nedra's yummy homemade jams!  We just love the Bedkes!!  They truly treated us like royalty!
We took pictures of the recipe that Leslie and Nedra used for the egg dish.
After breakfast, we reluctantly left Nedra's and drove to Murray, Utah for Part II of our family history segment of the retreat.  I had arranged with Uncle Glenn's wife, Karen to meet her and Glenn at the Olive Garden for lunch at 2:00 PM.  We arrived a little early and waited, and waited and waited, but they did not come.  Finally, I called Glenn at around 3:00 PM and he said Karen thought our get-together was the day before and they had come to Olive Garden and waited and waited and waited for us!  We all felt badly that somehow our wires got crossed and we couldn't get together that day!
We were really hungry after our wait so we ordered and ate lunch.
This all happened on September 21st which is Adam's birthday.  Adam loved french fries and ketchup so of course we had to toast Adam on his special day!  We took pictures to send to John and Cindy which really pleased them!
After lunch we did some shopping and found some hostess gifts for Nedra and Eric and Marcie.
The next morning we went to a session at the Payson Temple.  Kay has worked hard and found over 500 names on our line so we were able to help with 4 endowments!  It was special to be together in the temple with my sisters!!

After our temple session we drove into Provo and then had lunch at a Thai restaurant.  The food was really good!
After lunch we went to BYU Printing to pick up the long awaited Isaac Fox History!!  This book was 6 years in the making and I can't tell you how rewarding  it was to see the finished product!!!!
Isaac Fox is my great-great grandfather on my mother's side.  He was an amazing man!  He crossed the plains as an 11 year old boy to come to Lehi, Utah.  He served 2 three year missions to the Hawaiian Islands and a third mission to Skull Valley, to work with the Hawaiian people there.  He kept missionary journals detailing his missions.  This book includes our  typed transcription of his journal from a scanned copy of the original.  Also in the book are histories of Isaac and his wife  (our great-grand mother) Elizabeth, photos and many other interesting things about Isaac and his family.  We went to a copy shop in Provo to make copies of Nedra's History so that each of us would have one.
The weather had turned a bit colder with an early snowfall that dusted the beautiful mountaintops.
After our big day, we returned to my house and relaxed with treats and lost of visiting!  The next morning after breakfast, everyone left to return home.  It was a wonderful time together - we made lots of "eternal" memories!  I do love my sisters!  Cindy Lou - we did miss you!!!
