50th Wedding Anniversary Cruise Part III

Prince Edward Island

This was my favorite port on this cruise - it was on my "bucket list" of places I wanted to see. The island was beautiful! We docked in Port Charlottetown and walked a short distance to where we got on our bus to take the tour of some of the island highlights and to see the "House of Green Gables" - which was the home that inspired Lucy Maud Montgomery in writing her book - Anne of Green Gables

On our bus ready to go!
A "selfie" with 2 photo bombers!
Our tour took us through Charlottetown which is the capital and largest city in the Providence of Prince Edward Island.
We passed the Confederation Centre of the Arts which is for the visual and performing arts.
We also saw the University of Prince Edward Island and one of the local cemeteries.
On our way to North Rustico, we passed through farmland and saw potatoes growing and harvested hay. PEI produces 25% of Canada's potatoes and has the nickname of "Garden of the Gulf" because of its lovely farmlands.
Beautiful North Rustico!
We stopped to learn about lobstering on the island. Our guide taught us about lobster traps and asked our group some questions. One of the questions was: "If the first room in a lobster trap is called the 'kitchen' where the bait is hung to lure the lobster in - what is the second compartment which traps the lobster called?" No one in the group raised their hand to answer except Jon who knew that it was called the "parlor". The guide then said to Jon - "You are the wizard of wizards- what you don't know could be placed on the head of a pin"! Tricia then said to our family: "I also knew that!" Tricia loves to tease Jon and Jon teases her right back. During the bus tour, Jon asked the tour guide if he would repeat what he said about him so he could record it. Our guide was happy to accommodate him.  Thereafter on the trip, Jon would play the recording whenever he wanted to tease Tricia. He even called Tricia and James room more than once and when Tricia would answer, she would hear the "Wizard of Wizards" recording.

From there we traveled to Cavendish Beach which is known for its red sandstone cliffs and reddish sand beaches.
After seeing the Cavendish Beach and Cliffs, we then went to the Anne of Green Gables Farm. With such gorgeous scenery, I could almost imagine seeing Anne running through a meadow!
The Green Gables farm and its surroundings are the setting for the popular Anne of Green Gables novels by Lucy Maud Montgomery. The site is also known as Green Gables Heritage Place. The house was designated a National Historic Site in 1985 and the complex is located within Prince Edward Island National Park.

It was a busy day with lots of other tourists eager to see the interior of the home, so we waited in line for several minutes.
The home has been restored to look like the home in L. M. Montgomery's books.

All the girls had to try a Raspberry Cordial that was also written about in Anne of Green Gables. Below - a view of the back of the home.
Our last stop was the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company where we purchased jams and their famous raspberry pie.
Tricia and Jessica dividing a pie to be shared with others in our group
To one side of the Prince Edward Island Preserve Co. begins the beautiful Gardens of Hope - 12 acres of  lovely flowers and scenery for islanders and visitors to enjoy.

Our trip back to the ship took us passed more gorgeous PEI landscapes!
With such lovely scenery, this was my favorite stop!
